Daphne Caruana Galizia: the glorified Blogger _ Part II

It has now been 8 months since the brutal assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia (DCG). Civil societies, rightly so, are still demanding that the persons who commissioned the killing are brought to justice. They also demand the resignation of several people who hold office or who passed insensitive comments in the months that followed, but since when is resignation part of Maltese culture?

According to Wikipedia, Daphne “was a Maltese journalist, writer, and anti-corruption activist, who reported on political events in Malta. In particular, she focused on investigative reporting into government corruption, nepotism, patronage, allegations of money laundering”.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese investigative journalist and anti-corruption activist who was investigating Maltese government links to money laundering and tax evasion.” (Euronews)

What people seem to forget in 2018, or simply do not know (especially if foreign news agencies, although that would indicate lack of research) is that DCG started blogging in 2008 under a Nationalist Party (PN) administration. However, between 2008 and 2013 Daphne didn’t write about government corruption or nepotism, although they were rampant, even if not to the extent they are today.

Bar a few exceptions, she simply ridiculed the opposition party (PL) and its affiliates, even though the opposition has the constitutional obligation of holding the government to account.

In February 2010 she made fun of Labour Party affiliates’ punctuation: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2010/02/labours-business-forum-eats-shoots-and-leaves/

In August 2011 she wrote about Labour Party supporters being chavs: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2011/08/vote-labour-to-get-to-go-to-more-bbqs-hdejn-il-pool-narakhom/

In May 2012 (less than a year before the 2013 general election), she continued attacking the government fearing the opposition like a troll: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2012/05/i-thought-only-beautiful-young-people-were-meant-to-sit-behind-joseph/

In November 2012 (a couple of months before the general election), she was getting panicky: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2012/11/like-joseph-and-win-an-ipad-like-maltastar-if-you-like-joseph/

You might think that a couple of articles ridiculing the Opposition were carefully selected. If you want to see for yourself, check out the multitude of posts in of November 2012: https://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/page/1042/. No, no filter was applied to show only the posts criticising the Opposition. That was the only thing she wrote about. She certainly might have had a nightmare or two about what would come, as it was quite clear that Labour would win the election.

Excuse my language, but how the fuck can you describe someone who writes that bullshit and trolls the internet an investigative journalist? Any news outlet, I repeat, any news outlet, who refers to her as an investigative journalist has the credibility of a dictator in central Africa. Just because it seems to be cool to call Daphne Caruana Galizia an investigative journalist does not make her an investigative journalist, just as calling illegal immigrants refugees, migrants or asylum seekers doesn’t make them the latter.

Yes, it is true that she did a brilliant job at uncovering Labour corruption but she only did this out of personal self-interest. Malta never had good journalists who weren’t blinded by politics.

  1. She insulted hundreds of people. I think Glenn Bedingfield tried to compile the list and I doubt he managed to complete it.

    1. Daphne Caruana Galizia was a vile blogger where she attacked all those who doesn't share her views especially the they happens to be labor oriented people. The hate she had in her heart for labor was enormous. She insulted even the children of those who happen to be in her aim. She even insulted the memory of the late President Guido DeMarco and his family. And you call this woman the glorified blogger?
